Liquid lipsticks continue to gain momentum in the makeup world. Every brand is bringing out their own take on the formula and, somehow unintentionally, I’ve made it my mission to try every one of them. My drawers are full of formulas – some not quite matte, some too drying, some just right. And although some prefer liquid lipsticks a little drier, to promote longevity, I’m in the camp that loves mine easy to apply and easy to wear throughout the day. No fuss, no hassle, just long-wearing, beautiful colour. Here are a couple of my favourite formulas to reach for.
I was so surprised by how much I love this line-up of nude shades that Bare Minerals brought out a little while ago. I had a bit of a swatch party when I was in the U.S. and came home with Swag but also got the chance to try out, swatch and fall in love with a whole range of them, too. The formula feels quite liquid-y at first, which means it’s easy to quickly fix any application mistakes, before drying down to a really comfortable formula without any flaking or messing around. One coat is well and truly enough, too. They wear beautifully throughout the day and have such a wide range of nudes, there’s definitely something for everyone in the line-up. The applicator is also awesome – a flat, slightly longer shape that has just the right amount of product on it.
One of my most luxe liquid lipstick purchases – I couldn’t resist trying out this launch from Marc Jacobs. The packaging is luxe, the applicator is luxe and Slow Burn is such a beautiful mauve. It’s another formula that’s a little more liquid-y at first before drying down. It feels a little more present on the lips compared to my other favourites, and two coats is often a little much, but it definitely has the staying power to go along with it. It wears really well throughout the day, actually lasting through light meals and drinking without issue.
This long-wear formula is definitely a highlight of my liquid lipstick collection. Since trying my first shade, Tawny Rose, I fell in love with the slightly mousse-y formula that dries down quickly to leave behind a comfortable, intensely pigmented shade. I love that these wear down really well and don’t flake away during the day. I picked up the embarrassingly similar shade, Lychee, recently, and love that one too. The applicator is your standard doe foot but the formula is mousse-y enough that it’s incredibly easy to apply precisely to the lips. I love that these are also super compact, which is why I’ve got Tawny Rose in my handbag as I travel around Europe at the moment.
I never really mention the Rouge Edition Velvet formula but it continues to be one of my better finds from the drugstore when it comes to liquid lipsticks. Velvet is definitely the term to describe these – they go on mousse-y and don’t really dry down to a transfer-proof matte like some of the others in the list but they’re also super comfortable and never dry my lips out. If you don’t love how heavy some liquid lipstick formulas can feel, definitely check these ones out. I love the shade Don’t Pink Of it! but the bolder options in this line-up are seriously luxe, too.

I’ve had the Provocalips formula hanging out in my drawers for ages. In fact, it was one of the first PR packages I received! But when I need something truly life-proof, this is what I reach for. The application process on these ones can be a little fussier than the others, but the lasting power is worth spending a couple of extra seconds getting it right. Once these are in place, they do. not. budge. They apply like a very thin liquid and can be a little streaky at first but once you get that right and give it a minute for the formula to dry down, the colour stays beautifully all day long. It lasts through food, drinking and a whole day of being on the go. Definitely worth a look if you really need something that lasts all day.
A recent release from Australis really caught my eye. Maybe it was the rose-gold packing or the awesome shade line-up but I couldn’t resist grabbing one for myself. Firstly, these smell amazing (I can’t quite put my finger on it but I’m thinking grape bubble gum?). As the name suggests, these are more of a demi-matte formula. When applied, they actually stay fairly glossy, taking quite a while to really settle down to the demi-matte finish so I’ve been applying and blotting the formula down to achieve a seriously beautiful matte finish with a hint of comfortable sheen to it. It’s also worth doing the finger trick thingo when applying as they can initially gather around the inside of the lips. Otherwise, I’m quite impressed with this range from Australis. Not my favourites of the bunch but well worth a look if you’re after a budget option.
