It’s time for the big one – the yearly favourites. A rundown of all the products I’ve been loving this year. It’s hard to believe that we’re already here – 2017 has been an absolute blur but it’s also been an absolute pleasure to keep working hard on TBC. For my best of 2017, I decided to stick mostly to new discoveries rather than repeating myself over and over again. Yes, I still love my NARS TM and my Rimmel The Only 1 Lipsticks but I thought I’d take the chance to talk up some of the products that came into my life this year and became a part of my routine.
I also couldn’t resist adding in honourable mentions in every category. Because I’m a mess. For the most part, they’re products that I’ve loved just as much this year, or maybe I’ve only had them for half the year so can’t quite include them as the best of the year.
B A S E
Primer / Smashbox Photo Finish Primer Light
I’ll admit that this year, I didn’t really try out a lot of new and exciting primers, but this gem from Smashbox’s incredible line of primers definitely made it’s way into my favourites. For someone who doesn’t love the feel of heavy, silicone primers on the skin but still loves the effect they give to the skin, this is perfect. It doesn’t feel like it weighs the skin down and instead just really smoothes out pores and makes foundation apply much nicer.
Foundation / Maybelline Fit Me Matte & Poreless
Two drugstore foundations this year absolutely changed the game for me. But the Maybelline Matte & Poreless comes out on top. The shade match is awesome, the coverage is great for when I need something a step up from my regular tinted moisturiser-y bases, and the matte finish is so flattering. I’ve loved drugstore foundations in the past but I think this has become my new number one budget base.
Concealer / Tarte Shape Tape Contour Concealer
2017 was well and truly the year that Shape Tape took over the industry. And I’m not ashamed to admit that I fell for the hype. Although I’m not quite at the stage where I can never look at another concealer again, it’s hard to deny how effective this is on days where I really need to cover up my sleep deprivation. A small swipe under each eye goes a long way, I find, and it blends in so effortlessly with a Beauty Blender. It’s no wonder I reach for it most days.
Honourable mention goes to the Urban Decay Colour Correcting Fluid.
Powder / Kat Von D Lock-It Setting Powder
I’ve been trying plenty of loose setting powders this year and loving a lot of them too but I think if I bothered to count it out, this powder would be my most-used, particularly in the second half of the year. It just does such a brilliant job, I find. I love setting my under eyes with it but I also love how it looks on my t-zone, making the complexion look just a little smoother. Will definitely be picking up the full size at some stage.
C H E E K S
I know I said I was talking about all of my new favourites from this year, but nothing quite beats my Tarte blushes. And on mornings when I’m not sure what to reach for, these two always have my back. Exposed and Paaarty are similar shades, both flattering easy to wear nudes. Paired with an easy-to-wear, long-wearing formula and we’re on to a winner.
Bronzer / Becca Sunlit Bronzer in Bali Sands
When Becca released these beauties, it didn’t take long for me to give in and I’m very glad that I did. Bali Sands has quickly become one of my favourite picks for my pale skin. The shade is beautiful, the undertones are flattering and the formula is great, too. Subtle at first but easily buildable, Becca’s cheek products continue to impress. I can already tell I’ll be hitting pan on this one at some stage this year.
Honourable mention goes to Soap & Glory Solar Powder.
This was definitely one of the harder categories to pick from, probably because I love reaching for different highlighters every day to make the most of my always-growing collection. But somehow, I ended up with this Too Faced offering on top. I think these missed the mark for a lot of people, judging by reviews, but for me, the subtle glow that this beauty provides is all I need on the day-to-day. It’s pretty much foolproof which is why I reach for it whenever I don’t know which other highlighters to go for.

Eyeshadow / Colourpop Pressed Powder Eyeshadows
I was really looking forward to trying out Colourpop’s pressed eyeshadows when they launched, but I really wasn’t expecting to fall in love with them as much as I have. At least three orders later and I’m quickly filling up a palette with drool-worthy neutrals. The mattes are easy to work with and blend out beautifully and the shimmers speak for themselves when it comes to intense shine with minimal fallout (I prefer to apply to my fingers). Can’t wait for them to keep releasing shades for me to add to my collection.
Brows / Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz
My brow routine remained pretty constant this year, I was using a lot of Benefit at the beginning of the year but when they ran out I returned to my trusty Brow Wiz. And I have been loving it. The teeny nib makes it super simple to create natural-looking brows and even does a great job of sorting out the unruly tails of my brows. There have been plenty of new brow bits in my drawers this year but the OG love still comes out on top.
Mascara / Maybelline The Colossal Big Shot Mascara
Maybelline’s mascaras never cease to amaze me. Each formula works wonders for my lashes so I had no doubt that the Big Shot Colossal Mascara would too, when I got around to picking it up. The wand grabs every single hair, adding length, volume and definition. And it holds a curl. On top of it’s affordable price, what more could I ask for?
L I P S
Lipstick / MAC Lipsticks
I never really went through the MAC phase that a lot of people seem to when they first get into makeup but I think I’ve well and truly made up for it this year. I added so many goodies into my collection but the new lipstick additions have been on constant rotation. There’s a formula and a shade for pretty much anyone, so you can hardly go wrong. Syrup* & Brave* have taken up permanent residency in my handbag, it would seem, and Patisserie will always remain favourite.
Liquid Lipstick / Jouer Longwear Liquid Lip Creme
It was love at first swatch with this formula so this category was a bit of a no-brainer for me. I’ve been obsessed with Tawny Rose pretty much all year now. I always end up reaching for it when I want a my-lips-but-better shade in a formula that never lets me down. It’s mousse-y, applies beautifully and wears really comfortably. Will definitely continue adding shades from this range into my collection this year…
Lip Gloss / NARS Velvet Lip Glides
I was a little stumped for this category, honestly, because nothing immediately sprang to mind but then I remembered that for most of the year if you had a look in my handbag, you’d be able to find one of these. The Velvet Lip Glide formula has really impressed me this year. When I want a glossy lip, these have been my go-to’s.
