I’m about as far from a morning person as you can get. I set 237 alarms each morning to try and convince myself to get out of bed and it still takes me a solid half an hour before I start functioning like a human being. So when I have to get up and get going straight away, I need all of the help that I can get. Luckily, I’ve got a great little line-up of products that pick me up in no time and help me feel a little more like myself.
I’m sure I’m not the only one who loves having a good little routine in the morning so I thought I’d share my top, energising picks that get me up and at ’em each morning.
My first step when I wake up is always having a shower. And normally for a while there, I just stand there with my eyes closed trying to get it together, because I’m still half asleep. But then, I reach for this shower gel and the zingy scent instantly fills me with energy. At first, when I tried out the Oblepikha Siberica range, I wasn’t such a fan of the scent but now I absolutely love it. It’s super fruity, super citrus-y and a little bit herbal and it does an awesome job of waking me up in the morning. As lovely as the other array of sweet scents I’ve tried in the past are, this citrus kick performs a much more important task of waking me up and turning me into a functioning human being.
If I’m lacking sleep from the night before, you can be sure that my skin is not being very forgiving at all. Normally you can tell straight away because my skin looks duller and just a little grumpier. That’s where the Superfoliant comes in. I pour a little of the powder onto my hand, wet it, turning it into a paste and get scrubbing. After half a minute, I can already feel my skin thanking me and when I wash it off, I can see a huge difference. My skin feels infinitely softer and less irritated and looks so much brighter. If my morning routine is really in dire straights, this is my go-to – I find this is particularly the case on Monday mornings…
Face mists have a million and one benefits – they soothe the skin, they can calm nerves but they can also revitalise the skin and wake me up in no time. Once I’m out of the shower and prepping for makeup, I make sure to spritz a bit of Serozinc on to calm my skin while also keeping breakouts at bay. The aerosol mist is always super fine and relaxing, too, which definitely helps. Then, of course, I follow with my old faithful Effaclar Duo to lock in moisture and keep my skin nice and clear. There’s something incredibly powerful about having a routine, so making sure I do this every morning can make such a difference, even if it is just a little bit psychological.
A good lip balm is an essential for me. My lips are always drying out. I’m not sure if it’s just when I don’t drink enough water or if it’s because I’m testing lipsticks all the time. But each morning before I go into my makeup routine, I start off with a hydrating layer of lip balm. Lately, this Fresh one has been rocking my world. I mean, doesn’t a lip caramel just sound perfect? It’s a thin, comfortable balm that smells (and tastes) delicious. It packs a bunch when it comes to hydrating, and preps the lips well for whatever comes next, but never feels too heavy. And if I’m reaching for a matte finish, I simply blot it down. A perfect little perk-me-up before getting into makeup.
Obviously, throwing a bit of makeup on can make all the difference between me looking like a zombie and looking like a human. And a dewy complexion is a major step in the right direction. I also love making sure my under-eye area is nice and bright, hiding and correcting any dark circles that could give it away. And I’ve got a serious arsenal of products that do a great job of hiding my dark circles but lately, I’ve been reaching for this little pot of wonder from Becca. It’s a great peachy shade that corrects blue-ness under the eyes and covers really well, setting up a beautiful base for concealer. Applying a little bit with my ring finger and patting it in is such an easy step to add into my routine but really does make such a huge difference.
Sure, there’s plenty of steps involved in my morning routine, all while trying to down a bowl of muesli. But I find that it sets me up beautifully for the day ahead. The more I get into my little routine, the more productive I find myself in the mornings and that’s definitely not a bad thing. Sure, I think I’ll always be a night owl (I’m proofreading this post at 1:20 am!) but hopefully, my morning must-haves are just as effective for fellow nocturnals.
