Over a week into September and I’m honestly still trying to wrap my head about it. This year is disappearing quickly but it would seem that I’m picking up plenty of new beauty favourites along the way. The last couple of months have been pretty exhausting – it feels as if I’ve been sick for 75% of that time. That’s made motivation hard to come by. But here I am, still kicking, and getting geared up to tell you all about the things I’ve been loving in July and August, albeit a couple of days late.
As my post the other day might’ve hinted at, the last couple of months I’ve been all about perfecting my base. All thanks to some new discoveries and spending a little more time on the process, so it’s no surprise that base products dominate my favourites this time around. But there have also been some other awesome discoveries that are well worth the shout out.
AVAILABLE FROM: Mecca.
The launch of Mecca Max got me good – the packaging, the price point and the products. But this glowy primer has been my stand-out so far. It’s been exactly what I’ve needed lately to bring life back into my dull, drained complexion. Lots of glow without any pesky glitter. I’ve been wearing it with pretty much whatever base I’ve been reaching for but particularly under matte bases, it’s a winner.
I’ve got a million and one foundations in my drawers to get testing but this Colorstay Foundation has been dominating my MOTDs for the last couple of months. For years, I’ve heard raves and now I get why. The coverage is awesome for every day and with a sponge, it applies effortlessly in no time. It’s one of those bases that just works. And it’s not often I find a decent shade match at the drugstore, too.
I also mentioned this one the other day but it’s another that’s been popping up in just about every MOTD lately. The application took me by surprise with this thick, full coverage concealer but oh man, the results are worth it. My sleeping pattern always takes a hit when I’ve been sick so this has been very handy to hide that lack of sleep.
My lovely friend Sam surprised me a little bit after my birthday with a couple of gifts (aren’t I lucky?!) and among them, was this mini Tarte blush in a Sephora birthday gift. Straight away, I knew the shade was going to be right up my alley. Since then, I haven’t stopped reaching for it. It’s similar to my all-time fave, Exposed, but a little pinker. And the mini packaging is just too much for my heart to handle.
A subtle, pale-friendly bronzer that’s also been seeing plenty of use since it arrived. Bali Sands is such an easy to wear shade for me – impossible to go over the top with. It adds plenty of warmth and definition to my complexion and the formula is beautiful. I’ve been throwing it all over my face with a big fluffy brush and the results have been adding so much life back into my dull, flu-ridden complexion.
AVAILABLE FROM: Colourpop.
When I was first testing this out, I wasn’t overly impressed with how crumbly the pencil is. I found that if you wound it up too much or applied too much pressure, it wasn’t going to last long. And although this is a still a bit of a niggle for me, I can’t deny that I’ve been loving the formula lately. It’s the classic teeny tiny nib, perfect for really defining the shape of my brows and the shade is really great, too.
I was lucky enough to receive a couple of MAC lipsticks a couple of weeks ago and since then, I pretty much haven’t put them down. They’ve appeared so many times on Instagram because there’s nothing quite as beautiful as a brand new MAC lipstick bullet. But I couldn’t resist wearing Syrup. A sheer, mauve-pink that I seriously can’t get enough of. I think an updated MAC lipstick collection should be on the agenda soon.
When I have two friends (Laura & Sam) both telling me I need to try a product, it doesn’t take long for it to come home with me. But this recommendation has been spot on. This is one of those skincare products where you rub it into the skin and it balls up, taking all of the dead skin with it, and it’s been a straight up life saver for my skin for the last couple of months. Each time I reach for it (often when I’m just out of the shower in the morning), my skin has felt brand new afterwards. Smooth, hydrated, and best of all, my makeup applies beautifully on my skin. It’s also super affordable so now I’m passing on the recommendation to everyone else – definitely check this one out!
Another skincare revelation this month. I can’t believe it’s taken me this long to try out the very hyped up line-up of skin savers from Mario Badescu. I’d been struggling with those niggly, painful, under the skin pimples for a while and this sounded perfect. Now, I throw a bit of this on any spots that I can feel coming up and I’m genuinely amazed the next morning when they’ve calmed down dramatically. My boyfriend even tried this on a spot and became obsessed overnight. If you also struggle with cystic acne, this is well worth trying out.
My scalp has been very grumpy at me lately – super dry and irritated in this winter weather. So this new release arrived just at the right time. And so far, I love. I’ve felt an instant difference with my scalp and it’s also left my lengths feeling nice and hydrated too. I’m always kind of all over the place with trying new haircare but I love having old faithfuls in my bathroom when my hair’s being problematic.
AVAILABLE FROM: Say It With Polish.
I’ve mentioned this awesome polish brand in the past but I recently got some new shades that are definitely worth mentioning. Not just because the shade became an unexpected favourite but also because of the awesome cause the proceeds go to. First off, Auber-genie originally looked like it wasn’t going to be my kind of shade but once I got it on my nails, I fell in love with the vampy, winter vibe. But the message on the front of the bottle is also super important. As part of the Polish for Purpose program, Say It With Polish have released 6 bottle designs that relate to 6 different charities. And 100% of the profits go directly back to them. Awesome.
