It’s about time we talked about drugstore beauty products, yet again. I love rounding up my favourite finds in the budget beauty category for you all but every time I look back at old posts, I realise that I’ve come across new products that I love just as much. I wrote about the drugstore makeup starter kit a while back but since then, there have been some new releases and new discoveries that also need to be talked about. Here’s an updated look at the ultimate drugstore makeup menu (for now…).
Primer / Face of Australia Face Base Primer
My collection is severely lacking in drugstore primers (I have found a newbie that I love, though) but there have been a few I’ve tried and loved in the past. My top recommendation would have to be this one from Face of Australia. It’s lightweight and moisturising and leaves the skin prepped and ready for foundation. It would fit in perfectly with my collection of fuss-free, simple primers.
Foundation / Maybelline Fit Me Matte & Poreless & L’Oreal Nude Magique Cushion*
I’ve included two bases here because, with foundation, there’s no one-size-fits-all. Everyone’s skin is different so foundations that I might love might not suit the next person. But I thought I’d recommend one on either side of the oily-dry skin spectrum. For those with combination to oily skin types, the Maybelline Fit Me Matte & Poreless Foundation is well worth checking out – the finish is gorgeous and lasts really well on my skin, especially when set down with powder. I think those on the drier side of the skin spectrum would get along really well with the L’Oreal Nude Magique Cushion Foundation. It’s super glowy, hydrating and provides plenty of lightweight coverage.
Concealer / Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Concealer
There’s plenty of awesome concealers at the drugstore but these sponge-tip applicators continue to hold on to number one spot for me. I love these particularly for brightening and correcting under the eyes because the formula is so thin and easy to blend but they can actually pack a punch when it comes to concealing spots too. It’s no wonder I’ve got something like 3 backups hidden in my drawers.
Powder / Savvy CC Powders
Yes, I will continue to rave about these powders. I don’t even remember what convinced me to go for these in the first place but nowadays, I reach for these CC Powders pretty much every day to set my base. They do a beautiful job of setting down foundation, ensuring that my base stays in place and looks flawless all day long. They never look powdery or noticeable on the skin which I love. Definitely one of my all-time favourite finds from the drugstore.
Bronzer / Physicians Formula Butter Bronzer
This one seems like it’s a little hard to track down but let me tell you, it’s worth it if you’re after a no-fuss bronzer. It can be tricky to find a bronzer that works with lighter skin tones but ever since this has been in my collection, I haven’t stopped reaching for it. The formula is soft, buildable and incredibly blendable and the honey colour is never orange. Instead, it just adds plenty of natural glow and definition to the complexion.
I’ve mentioned this one a few times recently but I have been obsessing over this one since I repurchased it. It looks pretty unassuming in the pan but this one is the perfect natural looking flush for an awesome price. Again, the formula is nice and subtle so it’s hard to go overboard but it just adds a beautiful, pink flush to the cheeks. They’re also teeny tiny – perfect for travel or throwing in your makeup bag.
Highlighter / NYX Strobe of Genius Highlighter Palette*
I’m definitely still on the lookout for more drugstore highlighter releases – only a couple of brands have really joined in on the trend but NYX have blown me away with this 7 shade palette. There’s something for everyone in this beauty. Something to suit every skin tone and even a few more out there shades for when you’re feeling adventurous. And the formula is no joke. Incredibly glowy and beautifully blendable on the skin – I reckon this would be an awesome addition to anyone’s highlighter collection.
Eyeshadow / Models Prefer Eyeshadow Palettes
Oh man, this category was hard. There are so many awesome budget eyeshadows on the market. In fact, I could probably dedicate a whole post just to my favourite drugstore formulas. But for this, I went for something with a little bit of everything. Models Prefer have a couple of 12 shade palettes available within their range. Covering neutrals, rosy tones, smokey shades and even a palette full of mattes. Sometimes the shimmers can have a little bit of fallout to them and the lighter shades tend to need a bit of building up but for the price point and the range of shades, I can forgive that. At the moment, I’m loving the Ash Nude Palette but I’ve tried the Nude and Rose Nude palettes in the past, too.
Eyeliner / Models Prefer Infinite Colour Eye Pencil
I’m not a huge eyeliner wearer but I do love tight-lining to make the lash line look a little thicker and adding a little somethin’ to the lower lash line. These super creamy liners from Models Prefer glide on and smudge out beautifully before setting down and staying put all day long. I seriously cannot get enough of these ones. I particularly love the metallic shades in the range.
I haven’t really found my perfect drugstore brow product yet – I love a good retractable pencil but find that a lot of budget alternatives are too warm or don’t have the staying power. But this brow wax/brow powder combo from L’Oreal continues to impress. I love reaching for this when I want incredibly natural looking brows. The teeny brushes that are included in the compact do a great job of defining the brows without ever looking over the top. As for brow gel, I do love the Savvy Clear Brow Gel for every day but when I need something that’ll really set my brows in place, the NYX Control Freak is my go-to.
Mascara / Maybelline Lash Sensational
This isn’t so much a one-off recommendation as it is a recommendation for the whole line of Maybelline mascaras. In my opinion, Maybelline bring out the best mascara formulas again and again – lots of length, volume, separation and they even do a decent job of holding a curl. Lash Sensational is one of my recent favourites though for really defining the lashes and adding plenty of volume.
Lipstick / Rimmel The Only 1 Lipsticks*
No surprises that I’m putting these beauties in for my lipstick recommendation. I’m also kind of cheating and including the Only 1 Matte Lipsticks in here too, depending on what kind of finish you’re after. Both formulas are creamy, are super easy to apply and feel super comfortable on the lips. It’s no wonder that I have a crazy amount of them hanging out in my drawers. Across the board, Rimmel’s lip products are incredible but these Only 1 Lipsticks live up to their name.
Lip Gloss / NYX Butter Gloss
I’ve had a lot of lipgloss favourites from the drugstore in the past but when it comes to the ultimate fuss-free recommendation, this NYX gloss takes the cake. Not only for the pigmented, not too sticky formula, but also for the extensive shade range they offer. I love them because they’re super glossy, a little hydrating and don’t feel too uncomfortable on the lips.
