When it comes to hyped-up, cult favourites, it doesn’t come more highly recommended than the Estée Lauder Double Wear Foundation. It seems to be on everyone’s hit list and I’m genuinely shocked it took me so long to try it. When writing up my post on Adore Beauty’s best sellers, I wasn’t surprised to see it sitting pretty on top of the list and took it as a sneaky opportunity to purchase it for myself. And since then, it’s been true love. I couldn’t wait to get my thoughts together and report on this beauty.
Luxe, golden, but not entirely travel practical. As beautiful as the square, frosted glass bottle is – the lack of a pump does make this a bit finicky to dispense product from.
Although it works beautifully with whatever application method you choose, I’ve been really loving applying this one with a sponge. It adds a little more dewiness to the formula and keeps the coverage a little more appropriate for my everyday wear. If I’m reaching for it for a night out, I go for a dense brush instead so it reaches it’s full potential when it comes to coverage. It’s incredibly buildable, either way, without looking cakey or noticeable on the skin. I do find, however, that when applying it with a sponge, it doesn’t perform as well when applying a second layer over the top. It has a tendency to displace the layer underneath. I make sure to apply the second layer quickly, if I’m doing one, before the first layer has dried down completely.
It definitely leaves the skin looking quite matte, I’d say satin-matte because it never looks like a flat mask on the skin. Again, using a sponge takes away from that truly matte appearance. It looks really beautiful on the skin – flawless and never cakey. And perfect for those with oilier complexions. For a foundation that has so much coverage, I was surprised by how it looks so invisible on the skin, blending in seamlessly and looking effortless on the skin.
One quick going over with a sponge provides me with plenty of coverage for everyday wear – probably about a medium coverage. It still shows my freckles and a bit of the darkness from acne scarring but does a pretty awesome job. Applying it with a dense, foundation brush gives it an almost full coverage from the get go.
By far the most impressive thing about this foundation is how it looks after a day of wear. Every time, I am astounded by how put together I look at the end of the day. People weren’t joking when they talked about how long-wearing this base is. This easily lasts me through a 12-hour day without much fading and only a little bit of separation about the base of my nose, which is notorious for messing with foundations. I think this alone makes it a foundation worth checking out.
Estée Lauder recently extended the shade range, which was very exciting, because they finally added a shade that might match even me. I picked up 1C0 Shell and find it works incredibly well for me. One of the best foundation matches I’ve found. It can oxidise a little when used with the wrong powder, however.
If you have oily skin, this is always talked about as a must-try and now I can understand why. Satin-matte finish, awesome lasting power and doesn’t have a tendency to settle into pores.
If you have dry skin, I’d say you could also love this foundation. Particularly when used with a sponge, this could be a great base for when you need something high in coverage that will last all day.
Sick of hearing me rave about it yet? I truly wasn’t expecting to love this one quite as much as I do. My only other niggle with this foundation is that it does have quite a strong smell to it, I’m not a huge fan but I can look past it when the formula is this nice.
I’m glad I finally bit the bullet and added this one into my collection – it’s certainly not going to be an everyday base for me but it’s one of those bases that are nice to have when you need a little bit of extra coverage or staying power. Haven’t tried it yet? Grab a sample and give it a go because in my opinion, this one is truly worth the hype.
