My Thoughts on the Tarte Shape Tape Concealer

Tarte Shape Tape Concealer - Review - The Beauty Collection

There always seems to be a new concealer coming onto the market and knocking everyone’s socks off. There was the NARS Creamy Concealer, then there was the UD Naked Skin and now Tarte’s Shape Tape Concealer is sitting firmly on top. Everyone was raving about it so naturally, I grabbed it when Tarte was offering a discount on their site so I could try it for myself and see what all the fuss was about.

When it first arrived, I was quite surprised by how large the tube was, as well as the doe foot applicator inside. At first, I was a little apprehensive but found the large doe foot works well to really distribute the product under the eyes.

I quickly realised that for me, getting too heavy-handed with my application was going to be an issue. People on Youtube seemed to be going to town when applying it under the eyes but for me, that resulted in it looking a little cakier. I’ve gotten the hang of using only a small amount under each eye. The formula is incredibly pigmented so a little goes a very long way. And it truly gets the job done. A small dot on the inner corner under the eye blends out to cover the whole eye area seamlessly, I find, and covers any dark circles or sallowness I get under the eyes. Instead, it leaves my under eyes looking refreshed and bright.

I picked up the shade Fair, the lightest available, assuming it’d work well to highlight under my eyes. I was right, the shade is pretty close to my fair skin tone but provides a subtle brightening effect. All up, there’s an impressive fourteen shades in the range. This formula would work well on spots as well but the shade I have is slightly too light for that.

I find the thick formula works really well when worked into the skin with a damp BeautyBlender. It can take a little while to blend out the formula with my fingers, although the end result is just as good. I’m also in the habit of applying one eye at a time. The formula sets down quickly, so I try to work fast.

The truly incredible thing about this concealer is how it wears. Once blended out onto the skin, it sets without looking noticeable or uncomfortable on the skin. And it stays put all day long. I still set mine with powder but that’s purely out of habit. This concealer works just as well on it’s own and truly looks seamless and natural on the skin.

Overall, this has become my new favourite on days when I need something a little more full coverage. Some mornings, all I need is a bit of a brightening effect so I reach for something lighter. But on the days when I’m really making an effort, this has well and truly become my go-to. Tarte have really knocked it out of the park with this release so it totally makes sense that it’s receiving so much attention.

  • Literally everyone has been raving about this concealer – I don’t think I’ve seen a single bad review! I really want to try it but I had the UD Naked on my list next. Perhaps I should skip straight to Tarte? Haha 😛

    • The UD is amazing as well, slightly thinner and a little easier to blend into the skin but man, this is crazy good. Maybe wait until it launches in Sephora AUS and have a play in store?

I definitely need to try this concealer I am such a base junkie and i have so many high end ones on my list. Great post Ash!

    • I’m totally the same – I have so many things on my wishlist but can’t justify picking up even more bases!

I know I so desperately want to pick up the Josie maran foundation but I am a bit afraid shade wise. I tan quite easily I’ve only gone to the beach 3 times and I am 3 shades tanner but in winter i’ll be kind of paler so whenever I buy a foundation I know it will only match me for short bit of time.

        • Ah you’re lucky! I pretty much never tan so if a foundation doesn’t match me when I get it it’s unlikely to ever work for me unless I use lightening drops!

          • Bernadette

tanning easily is overrated. You spend some days with your foundation not matching you properly and walking around like it’s your first time wearing makeup.

          • hahah oh dear, maybe I should think myself lucky then! 😛

          • Bernadette

You should haha. While my tan fades very slowy and I never really went back to my original paleness. it fades so slowly that without even realizing a foundation that I reach for constantly will just suddenly not much me. Same goes for concealers. These days I just mix foundations together just to get the right shade and the foundations with formulas I adore I just purchase in multiple shades.

          • Mixing foundations is definitely a good idea! I just always check my face in every mirror in the house to make sure 😛

          • Bernadette

I definitely do love mixing foundations but when a certain foundation has an amazing formula that’s when i buy a more updated shade.

          • That makes sense!

Such a good review! I’ve been so curious about this concealer as I’ve seen so many people rave about it! I am still so tempted to pick it up!!

  • I’ve become addicted to this stuff! Tarte is killing it at the moment x

  • This sounds amazing! I’ll have to pick it up at the next Tarte sale or when it hits Sephora Australia!

    • I think there was a sale on the Tarte site leading up to Valentines Day! Not sure if it’s still going but worth checking! 🙂

  • Great review! This sounds like an amazing concealer. It’s actually on my wishlist, so I hope to snatch this one up very soon!

  • Glad to hear you like this concealer and that you trialled different ways to get the best out of it. I would like to try it eventually when I’m sick of using my Fit Me concealer lol.

I purchased it in the recent sale, I’m hoping it works for my somewhat dehydrated under eyes and hereditary dark circles

  • Megan Biggin

This is top of my beauty wishlist, I’ve just heard so many amazing things about it. I love Tarte’s foundations too so hopefully it lives up to those. x

  • Hahaha I thought the exact same thing when I first applied it too…. how can anyone go so heavy handed with it. Whatever comes out on the applicator on the first pump does my entire face! Your photos are amazing as always.

  • I haven’t tried the Shape Tape but I did get the 12 hour Amazonian Clay one and I’m super happy with it; brightening and good coverage!
