As I mentioned on social media, over the weekend I was very busy celebrating my brother’s wedding. It was a very busy and very warm day. Not an awesome combination when you’re hoping to keep makeup on your face for 16 hours straight. Luckily, I somehow stumbled across a combination of products that stayed in place all day (with the help of a strategic powder application before the reception) and helped me look the part.
I wasn’t quite sure what to do with my base, particularly knowing it was going to be such a hot day, so I tested a couple of options throughout the week to make sure it was going to last through hot weather. For primer, I started with the Mecca Cosmetica Soft Focus Smoothing Primer to keep my complexion smooth and help with longevity. This primer is truly beautiful, it always leaves my base looking amazing without feeling heavy on the skin.
I then combined two bases – the Anastasia Beverly Hills Stick Foundation in Alabaster with a little bit of the NARS Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturiser in Terre-Neuve over the top. Separately, they’re two of my favourite bases so it’s no surprise that they work beautifully together, too. A little bit of glow, just the right amount of coverage and plenty of longevity. The NARS TM does have SPF but I knew that there wasn’t going to be any flash photography, so I wasn’t too worried.
I used my new obsession, Tarte’s Shape Tape Cosmetics in Fair under the eyes and set it with RCMA’s No Color Powder – the usual. And I finally set everything down with the Savvy CC Powder in the Brightening shade. One of my favourite all-over setting powders and a trusty companion when I felt like my skin needed a touch-up.
I stuck with three favourites on the cheeks. Becca Mineral Blush in Flowerchild is my favourite for giving a healthy glow, Physicians Formula Butter Bronzer added a little definition and warmth to my face and I finished it off with one of my more subtle highlighters, the Laura Mercier Matte Radiance Powder in Highlight-01. Because of the heat, I didn’t want something that’d make me look sweaty, rather than glowy. LM’s subtle, pearlescent sheen got the job done.
I accidentally went a little bit crazy with the eyeshadow, probably because I hadn’t thought ahead. I started out with the matte shades in the Too Faced Natural Eyes Palette before applying a little of Burberry’s Pale Barley all over the lid and topping it off with a tiny bit of NARS Dual Intensity Eyeshadow in Himalia on the very center of the lid. Himalia seems to be the shade I always reach for when there’s a special occasion. The combination was subtle, bronze-y and felt very within my comfort zone. For brows, I went with the tried and tested Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz in Taupe and set it in place with my trust Savvy Clear Brow Gel.
Next up, I attempted to work with false lashes. You know it’s a special occasion when I try for half an hour to get false eyelashes to look natural on me. The Socialeyes Butterfly Lashes were hidden at the back of my stash and I fell in love. They added a little bit of volume and length without being too dramatic for my smaller eye shape. I applied the lashes with the Socialeyes Adhesive and found that it was actually a pretty pain-free experience. Waterproof mascara on the lower lashes was a necessity, too. To avoid smudging from the heat and also from tearing up a little at the ceremony, if I’m honest. My trusty Maybelline Full N Soft Waterproof Mascara got the job done.
I’m silly and totally forgot to include the lip products in the pictures… but I went for my favourite my-lips-but-better liquid lip – Jouer Longwear Lip Creme Liquid Lipstick in Tawny Rose. The formula is comfortable and non-drying and it wore off naturally throughout the day, so I didn’t have to be worried about touching it up every five seconds.
All in all, it’s an achievement in itself that my makeup stayed in place in the 30-degree weather. And now I have a tried and tested makeup menu for summer-proofing my makeup.
What’s your favourite makeup to reach for when you need to look your best?
