Happy 2017! It’s back to regular content on TBC and I’m very excited about what this year holds. But of course, I’m not quite done with 2016 yet – I couldn’t miss rounding up my favourite beauty bits of 2016 in one neat little post. This year was all about the routine for me, finding products that worked for me and sticking to them. Plenty of these products have been hanging around for most of the year and there are a couple that became quick favourites in the last couple of months. Either way, they’re the best of the best.
Primer – Becca Backlight Priming Filter
Towards the end of the year, I didn’t really reach for much primer (other than a nifty spray that I’ll be reporting in on soon) but this glow-inducing, perfecting primer continues to remain a favourite. It achieves everything that I’m after to perfect the skin before going in with foundation. It’s a pricey option, so I can wholeheartedly recommend a L’Oreal dupe for those after a glowy primer at a lower cost.
This was a hard one, purely because I rotate through so many bases each week but this one had to come down to the old favourite. It’s got the perfect amount of coverage for every day and the finish is completely natural for me. It also takes the cake because it’s so easy to apply, making it the one I reach for when I’m running late. Everyone raves about NARS’s Sheer Glow but this has got to be my fave from the NARS lineup.
Concealer & Corrector – Bare Minerals Stroke of Light
I had so many options for this category it was getting a little ridiculous but the one I reached for most this year was the fuss-free option from Bare Minerals. A couple of swipes under each eye and I’m instantly looking brighter. On my skin tone, it works well to correct any discolouration as well as conceal on an every day basis but when I’m really putting in the effort, I layer it on top of another concealer.
Honourable mentions in this category include Bobbi Brown Corrector*, Becca Under Eye Brightening Corrector* and Make Up For Ever Ultra HD Invisible Cover Concealer – told you there were a couple!
Powder – RCMA No Color Powder
This one has got to be my very favourite discovery of 2016. I use this powder every single day now to set my under eyes and lightly set the rest of my face and there’s truly nothing better. It does an incredible job of improving how my makeup looks on the skin and improving how it wears throughout the day without looking cakey or unnatural on the skin. It’s also such a great price that I reckon it needs to be on everyone’s to-buy list.
Honourable mention to the Savvy CC Powders.
This was the year of the barely there blush, for me. I cut my blush collection in half because I owned too many bright shades that just never got worn. Now I’m left with a beautiful array of peachy pinks, baby pinks and, my favourites, neutrals. Tarte Exposed was the blush I reached for when I couldn’t decide what to wear. It was also the blush I reached for when I needed something that would work with everything.
Bronzer – Physicians Formula Butter Bronzer
I’ve mentioned before that this year was a good year for discovering awesome bronzers for pale skin but this one’s been getting the most use since I picked it up halfway through the year. It’s effortless, never over the top and always leaves me looking defined and bronzed but never orange.
Highlighter – The Balm Mary-Lou Manizer
This was definitely one of the harder categories because my highlighters are sort of like my babies – I love them all. So I went with the OG, the one that never does my wrong. Mary Lou is such a stunning champagne gold. It’s easily dupe-able but there’s just something awesome about this formula that keeps me coming back.
Eyeshadow – Too Faced Natural Eyes Palette
Again, how can you truly narrow it down to just one eyeshadow product? Particularly when you think about all of the awesome releases this year. But still, I returned to the eyeshadow palette that can do no wrong in my eyes – chock full of easy-to-wear neutrals that work together effortless. This palette is perfect for the eyeshadow beginner or just anyone that loves a simple neutral eye.
Eyebrow Product – Benefit Precisely My Brow Pencil*
I learnt a lot about shaping and filling in my brows this year. I think I’m finally getting to the stage where I feel like I know what I’m doing. As much as I love the ABH Brow Wiz, Benefit’s new brow releases blew me away this year and it’s taken a lot of effort to tear me away from their precise yet easy to use pencil. It’s great for filling in sparse patches and adding a little more definition to the tail of my brow.
Mascara – Smashbox X-Rated Mascara*
A few formulas became quick favourites towards the end of the year but it didn’t feel right including them here. I continue to come back to this one, though, because it does such a great job of giving me natural yet dramatic lashes. A must for any beauty lover with blonde lashes. It adds just the right amount of length and volume and it never smudges under the eyes or onto my brow bone.
Lip Product – Rimmel The Only 1 Lipsticks*
This category was tricky. I loved a lot of lip formulas towards the second half of the year but honestly, I didn’t experiment a lot with lip colour this year – sticking to my tried and true favourite shades. These Rimmel beauties released in January and I reckon there’s been one hanging out in my handbag ever since. It’s just the kind of formula I love – creamy, moisturising and never uncomfortable. My favourite shades are 200 It’s A Keeper and 700 Naughty Nude.
Honourable mentions to Burt’s Bees Lipsticks* & the Bare Minerals Gen Nude Liquid Lip Colours.
