For the longest time, I just thought that bronzer and I just didn’t get along. Every time I tried it I looked muddy and orange. Over the years, I like to think my makeup skills have improved somewhat… I’ve learnt a little more about proper placement but I’ve also learnt that some bronzers just aren’t designed to work for someone with skin as pale as mine. But this year I’ve found a whole bunch of newbies that have filled the hole in my collection. For all the other pale skinned beauty lovers out there or even if you’re still just a little scared of bronzer, this one’s for you.
As you can see from the swatches below, this formula is quite pigmented which can make it a little more difficult to work with. I find I can only use the tiniest bit on my duo-fibre brush or things can start looking quite patchy and over the top. It doesn’t actually look orange when blended on the skin, even though it’s looking a little that way in the swatch. With a light hand, or for a little more intensity, this can work really well. If you’re super ghostly pale like me, this could still be a little too tricky to work with, if I’m honest.
One of the top things on my to-buy list when I was in the U.S. was this raved about bronzer. Since bringing it home with me, we’ve fallen deeply in love, to say the least. The shade is pretty much perfect for pale skin – it’s got a hint of glowiness to it, as well, which makes it all the more enjoyable. It never looks orange, it never looks overdone and is pretty much my new favourite of the bunch.
I don’t show it off a lot because my very old compact is looking a little worn out, but my long standing favourite comes from The Body Shop. This was pretty much the first to show me that pale skin and bronzer can still get along. The formula is so soft and smooth and the colour is a subtle honey that always looks natural, never orange. The packaging is also a little less bulky than the Physicians Formula.
L to R: NYX Matte Bronzer, Physicians Formula Butter Bronzer, The Body Shop Honey Bronzer.
My pick of the bunch would definitely be the Physicians Formula Butter Bronzer, knocking my trusty Honey Bronzer out of top spot. However, all three in this line-up are well worth investigating if you’re still searching for your match made in heaven.
What’s your favourite bronzer?
