The launch of the Maybelline Vivid Matte Liquid Lipsticks* has been long awaited by Australian beauty lovers – we’d heard the raves from those in the U.S. and finally they’re arriving on our shores. The packaging is simple and stunning and the product itself, in my opinion, has definitely been well worth the wait – this is the first of a couple of quick swatch posts that will be going up this month to celebrate some new lip launches in the drugstore…
The formula is a sort of thin mousse consistency, just one swipe provides crazy strong pigment while feeling incredibly lightweight. I think some of the shades slightly thinner on the pigment, namely Electric Pink, Orange Shot and Possessed Plum, but they’re all pretty good across the board. Although the name might suggest that these are Maybelline’s take on the matte liquid lipstick trend, that’s not quite the case – they don’t dry down to a complete matte, staying creamy on the lips throughout wear. They start off quite glossy when first applied but end up with more of a satin finish. The applicator is quite long and flat, coming to a point at the end. It can be a little tricky for application at first but I’ve quickly gotten used to it quickly and find it does well to distribute the product onto the lip before I rub my lips together to get an even coverage.
I’m so impressed with how comfortable these are, even after a couple of hours of wear. I like to blot them down with a tissue to ensure a slightly more matte finish and find it works well to also improve the longevity of the colour. Eating and drinking disturbs a little bit of the product but the brighter shades leave a stain on the lips which makes the wear less obvious. There are eight shades launching into the Australian market. Obviously a lot of them are quite bright but neutral lip lovers won’t be disappointed with the range either.
50 Nude Thrill – a warm-toned nude/brown shade, very Kylie Jenner-esque.
05 Nude Flush – light mauve pink, so it’s unsurprisingly my favourite from the range.
15 Electric Pink – a stunning bright, almost neon pink with blue-undertones.
30 Fuchsia Ecstasy – medium berry pink, another favourite for me.
25 Orange Shot – a beautiful, warm, deep orange.
35 Rebel Red – the red of the range, with a slightly warm-orange undertone.
40 Berry Boost – very similar to Fuchsia Ecstasy, just a little deeper with more of a purple undertone.
45 Possessed Plum – a vampy pinky-plum – the patchiest of the bunch, pigmentation wise.
L to R: Nude Thrill, Nude Flush, Electric Pink, Fuchsia Ecstasy, Orange Shot, Rebel Red, Berry Boost, Possessed Plum.
Vivid? Yes. Matte? Not so much. Incredible? I think so. The whole range is incredibly impressive with the only shade that left something to be desired being Possessed Plum. It always looked a little patchy upon application. For those who want to try out the liquid lipstick trend without getting too into the matte finish these should be top of your to-try list.
