Liquid lipsticks are definitely having a moment and honestly, I don’t think they’ll be going away any time soon. Every brand is jumping on board and seeing as Smashbox consistently impress me with their new releases, I was very excited to see whether this newly released formula, with claims of longevity and comfort, could convince even a liquid lip skeptic like me. I always prefer the easy application of a creamy lipstick over a fast-drying liquid lip any day but these have definitely got me converted. Smashbox say that they’re new Always On Matte Liquid Lipsticks make use of their primer oil technology to keep lips hydrated and comfortable throughout the day, without compromising on the matte finish or on pigmentation. They’re budge-proof, non-feathering and water-resistant with a range of 20 colours.
The applicator in a triangular shape, coming to a precise point which really makes application easy – even for amateurs like me. It’s pretty easy to create a clean line around the edge of the lips before filling in with colour and if I do get a little carried away the formula takes a moment or two to set so there’s time to get in there with a cotton bud to fix any mistakes.
From first swipe it’s clear that each shade I received was incredibly pigmented and even, exactly what I look for in these matte liquid lipstick formulas. As I mentioned there’s plenty of time to get the application right before they set down similarly to a lot of the popular liquid lipstick formulas on the market. To begin with, it feels quite present on the lips but not uncomfortable and once it’s dried down to a complete matte I was surprised to see it didn’t highlight any of the dry patches on my lips.
I’ll admit I haven’t given a full day’s wear to every shade (haven’t found much of an excuse to rock a grey lip) but of the four or five that I’ve tested for longevity I’ve found they’re a pleasure to wear, surprisingly so for someone like me who often experiences dryness and flakiness after liquid lipstick application. It wears comfortably, it doesn’t feel heavy and most importantly – it lasts well even through a meal. I’ve had lunches, dinners and desserts while wearing these shades, requiring minimal touch ups to the center of the lips. A stain actually remains behind so it’s not that noticeable that the shade has worn away. Touch ups don’t end in patchiness, which is always a big plus with these kinds of formulas.
Here’s a quick swatch of ten of the twenty shades in the line up – try and stop me from picking up more from the range when I’m in the U.S. in a month…
Stepping Out – deep brownish-nude, very Kylie-inspired.
Dream Huge – a mauve pink that dries down a little darker than shown.
Driver’s Seat – light orange-peach-pink.
Baja Bound – stunning coral-pink – a shade that would look stunning with a tan in Summer.
Out Loud – darker terracotta orange.
Shockaholic – unapologetic bright magenta.
Bawse – a deep true red, made in collaboration with the Youtuber Lilly Singh.
Miss Conduct – vampy plum-red.
Some Nerve – straight up light purple.
Chill Zone – a cool grey.
Favourites of mine include Stepping Out, Dream Huge, Shockaholic and of course the bright red Bawse. A combination of Stepping Out and Dream Huge has been getting a lot of wear, too. The range does seem to cover all your bases though and although the grey was initially scary, I’ve had quite a bit of fun playing mixologist and mixing it with the other shades to create new colours (you would’ve seen the swatches all up my arm the other night if you follow me on Snapchat at ashtbc).
The main reason that I shy away from liquid lipstick formulas, beyond the fact that I’m not great at the precise application, is that often they’re often uncomfortable and hard to touch up during the day. Luckily, I’ve found another formula that makes the process easy – these Smashbox shades have really impressed me and have quickly shot up the ranks of liquid lipsticks that I’d reach for when I’m feeling adventurous.
What’s your favourite liquid lipstick formula?
