We all knew it was coming – the yearly round up of the best bits that I’ve put on my face this year. It’s been a big year for makeup – beautiful releases, new formulas and technologies and I’ve been very lucky to try out a lot of new stuff. I started picking out favourites from each category and then quickly realised that I loved a lot of stuff this year, and instead of writing the longest post in human history I’ve narrowed it down to the top 15.
(also, I’m sorry the photos in this post are so all over the place – the lighting has just not been my friend for the past few weeks…)
Since reviewing it earlier in the year, my love for this hydrating, calming, coconutty primer has only grown more intense. Every time I use this my skin just feels so happy with me. Foundation applies better, it lasts longer and looks a little more glowy. It basically just feels like a souped-up moisturiser for my skin but it really does prime for foundation well. If you’ve got dry skin or just find your face looking kind of dull or dehydrated some days, I can totally recommend this one.
This has been a revelation for me this year – it’s been the perfect lightweight base, no matter the season, which still delivers enough coverage to keep me happy. This has definitely been my most reached for base since I first reviewed it and I’m already dreading running out of it before I’ve bought myself a backup. The texture is thick but it blends out beautifully. I think what impresses me so much is that at the end of the day, my skin still looks glowy and even – once set with powder, this stuff stays put on my skin.
When I’ve been wanting something a little higher coverage this is what I’ve gone for. It’s been love since the first application with this one and it’s continued to impress me since. It’s more of a traditional foundation compared to the Bare Minerals Complexion Rescue, a little thicker and it takes a bit more effort to apply but once it’s in place, it wears well throughout the whole day and has a finish that’s just glowy enough.
Everyone has been raving about this concealer this year and serious props to Urban Decay, they’ve really gotten it right with this creamy, full coverage concealer that manages to look flawless and never crease. When blended in with a Beauty Blender this stuff looks simply amazing. I’ve been using it mostly under the eyes but it’s also good for blemishes. The applicator is so bendy and easy to use, too. This was easily my favourite for the year, overtaking a previous love for NARS Creamy Concealer.
Another absolute revelation for me this year. And to think I didn’t always have this product lying around to set my undereyes and the rest of my face. Every time I use this to set my foundation and concealer in place I’m blown away with how flawless my skin looks. I’ve never been much of a powder girl but this has converted me completely.
Although blush is something that I change on a daily basis, when I was looking in my drawers trying to decide what products made the cut, this blush really stood out to me as the one that I’ve been reaching for the most this year. It’s just effortless – the perfect subtle and flattering pink. I find that it really goes with every look and manages to brighten up my complexion beautifully. Another hit from Becca.
My casual love for highlighters became an all out obsession in 2015 and although there are SO many that could’ve made their way into this post, Riviera definitely takes the top spot. The shade is beautiful and like nothing I’ve seen on the market before and the formula just works. It lasts well on the skin, never accentuates pores and looks glowy, not glittery.
Eyeshadows were another thing that obviously got experimented with every day but, of course, Makeup Geek shadows really stood out. The shade range, the formula and the very reasonable price means that my collection grew quite a lot this year. My particular favourites include Barcelona Beach, Homecoming & the Foiled Eyeshadows in Grandstand and In The Spotlight but let’s be real – I love all of my ridiculously large collection.
There have been a few eyeshadow palette loves but this ABH one really blew me away. The colour selection is an awesome mix of shades right in my comfort zone and those that kind of push the boundaries. The formula is incredible and there are SO many options here to play with and create different looks with. Pink Champagne, Self-Made and Hot & Cold are my favourites from the bunch. I’ve swatched the palette and said a little more about it here.
When it came to quick and easy eyeshadow this year, these creamy beauties got the job done every time. I picked up a few shades in a Christmas set last year and since then, a few of the shades have been used so much – particularly Amethyst and Moonlight. They’re creamy enough that they blend beautifully and you only need a teeny bit to cover the lids but they also set down really well and don’t budge for the whole day. Let’s just say there are a few more shades on my to-buy list.
It’s hard to even keep track of how many mascaras I tested this year but this sample size that came with a Sephora order has definitely been the one I’ve loved the most (although Too Faced’s Better Than Sex Mascara does continue to impress too). It separates the lashes, lengthens and actually manages to hold a curl. As I’ve mentioned before, it’s essentially the perfect mascara for every occasion, particularly now it’s dried out a little more. Another coat takes me from natural to bold but it’s never clumpy or spidery. I’m definitely on to a winner.
For me, 2015 was the year where I finally worked out eyebrows. Although I’ve loved the ABH Brow Wiz for a while now (it was even in my 2014 favourites) this year it just made all of the difference, I really learnt how to fill in my eyebrows properly. The Brow Wiz is so precise and easy to use, I hardly reach for anything else nowadays.
Boe Professional Super Shine Lipstick in Diva –
I definitely don’t think I was expecting to love this lipstick as much as I do when I grabbed it on impulse. Pinky mauves were definitely my favourite shades this year and Diva was definitely among my most worn lip products. The formula is hydrating and comfortable to wear and the shade is perfect for every day,
For bold lips, this was my go-to this year. In fact, I even had this on my lips when I met Francois Nars himself – very exciting stuff. I love the NARS lip pencils and this bright watermelon lip pencil never disappoints when I’m feeling a little bold. I also love dabbing it in for a light stain of colour.
I wore a lot of lip gloss in 2015, a LOT, but this newcomer from L’Oreal has been basically the only one I’ve reached for since I received it. It’s glossy yet longwearing, it’s quite brown but yet works so well on my lips to produce the perfect natural looking lip colour. The whole range has really impressed me.
Phew. That’s another year of makeup loves, done and dusted. I can’t believe the next post that goes live on TBC will be timestamped with 2016 at the end. There are so many other products that I could’ve mentioned here – 2015 has been an awesome year for new discoveries.
