Three Hits & Three Misses From Australis

Winners & Losers from Australia - Velourlips, Metallix Eyeshadows, Contour Kit, Finishing Powder, Colour Inject Lipstick, Stayput Eyeliner

Australis is one of the first makeup brands that I remember from when I was younger but back then it looked fairly different. Nowadays, after a rebrand, they’re priding themselves on sticking close to the trends coming out to us from America and beauty lovers in Australia have been all over the brand. But personally, I’ve found their range a little hit and miss, luckily more hit than miss but still, there are some products I love and some products that are a bit of a fail.

The Hits

Australis Colour Inject Mineral Lipstick in Samba

This has got to be one of my most reached for lipsticks by far. It’s creamy, easy to apply and actually lasts. It’s the perfect pinky, mauvey MLBB shade that I goes with anything so I always reach for it on those days where I’m indecisive about what to wear on the lips. The shade range of these lipsticks cover all of your bases, too.

Australis Stayput Longlasting Eyeliner in Chocolate –

I’m not a huge eyeliner wearer but whenever I need a foolproof brown eyeliner that will smudge out perfectly and look effortlessly chic, this is my go-to. It’s a wind-up liner that’s super creamy and the perfect shade of brown. Again, it stays put no matter what, even on the waterline. I really must investigate the Australis eyeliner range further…

Australis Ready Set Go Finishing Powder –

It was mentioned recently when I spoke about setting under the eyes but it’s worth another mention. For the price of $13.95, this loose translucent setting powder is all kinds of amazing. The powder is so smooth and finely milled it’s honestly crazy. It’s awesome dusted over your under eye concealer or all over to lightly set your foundation without looking cakey or gross.

The Misses

Australis AC ON TOUR Contour Kit –

When this launched just about every beauty junkie snatched one up and then after a few tries, felt fairly disappointed with the quality and shades in this contour kit. I compared it to the newly released Models Prefer kit recently and can totally recommend that one but the shades in this palette are muddy, tricky to blend and generally a little disappointing. The yellow banana powder in the middle of the top row is, however, pretty awesome if you’re after something pigmented and colour correcting, so there is an upside!

Australis Velourlips Matte Lip Cream in Mi-A-Mee, Bar-Tha-Lona & Doo-Bai –

Some people love these matte liquid lip creams and others can’t stand them, unfortunately I’m firmly in the can’t stand them camp. I’ve tried them again and again but they just don’t seem to work for me. One layer is a little bit patchy and very drying, two layers leads to very unattractive cracking. The shade range is AWESOME, I’m always in store swatching them and Australis keep coming out with new, awesome, trendy additions to the range but I just don’t have the patience to make them work. Maybe if your lips are in a healthier state than mine are then these could work for you? Lovers of the Velourlips – what am I doing wrong?!

Australis Metallix Eyeshadows in Guns And Rose Petals & Gold Gaga –

These creamy, metallic eyeshadows are another product that have the beauty community divided. They’re reminiscent of the Stila Magnificent Metals Foil Shadows in their foil finish and the shade range is gorgeous. Whenever I swatch them they’re look awesome but on the eyes they’re chunky, creasy, tricky to blend and just don’t want to work for me. It’s another product where I’m clearly doing something wrong because on some people they look incredible.

What do you think of the Australis range? What other products should I be trying?

The Metallix eyeshadows have a real learning curve! I use fingers (hate doing that) and apply in small layers 🙂

    • Yeah, I just haven’t had the patience to properly make them work and I’m the same – not big on using my fingers to apply shadow.

  • I absolutely swear by Australis’ pressed powder, but maybe now I should give the loose powder a go. Gotta say the Metallix eyeshadows do look really beautiful in the pot!

    • I have one of the pressed powders sitting there but haven’t given it a go yet – I’m excited! The Metallix shadows do look gorgeous, the shade range is amazing! But they just won’t work for me

  • I need to try their eyeliners – I have trouble getting any liner to stay put on my eyes. I also don’t like the Velourlips, so drying. I have one Metallix eyeshadow and love it. I use it on top of a primer with a very flat synthetic brush and dust over it with translucent powder.

    • Well it says it all in the name of the product 😉 hahah ooh thank you for your tip with the Metallix eyeshadow – will have to try that method!

  • I haven’t tried a whole lot from Australis, but I haven’t heard anything negative about their Fresh & Flawless powders. I own a couple of the Metallix eyeshadows but have barely used them to form an opinion on them. They do sound tricky to work with though!

    • I have one of those sitting there but I haven’t used it yet, waiting to finish off another powder! Would be interested to hear your thoughts when you do try them out!

  • Agreed on many of these! I’ve never bought any of the Velourlips, though I’ve come very close. I remember the early reviews that I read about them chipping off, etc and I was just put off, so I don’t think I’ll ever give ’em a go! I’m torn on the Metallix, they look sooo pretty and glittery when first applied but unless I set them with a powder shadow, they definitely crease, go chunky and almost…scaley??

    Tasha // shiwashiful.

    • Yeah, they definitely have a tendency to flake! Scaly is a really good way of describing the finish of the Metallix shadows, like in some lights it looks fine and in others it’s just super chunky!

I won the contour and highlighting palette in a giveaway, and I have to agree with you! The contour shades are a bit hard to blend, especially with my almost nonexistent cheekbones, haha. However, I do love the middle, cooler shade to contour my nose!

  • Love Velourlips and the Metallix range. I apply the eyeshadow with fingers and build up and that seems to work best. Velourlips I also work in with a finger before it “sets” to get a non-patchy coverage. I find the formulas do differ between shades though.

  • Oh I totally agree with you on the contour kit and velourlips! It dries too quickly and I can’t get a second layer to work well at all 🙁
I’ll have to investigate the translucent loose powder to see what it’s about.

  • Yeah, I really can’t see what all the fuss is about with the Velourlips but they sell so well!

  • I love love love the translucent powder and have noted down the Lillie Colour to try as its so pretty and my perfect sort of Colour!

  • Ohh I remember trying their Fresh and Flawless foundation back in the day. When I didn’t know anything about makeup and it didn’t match at all haha. Plus it broke me out so I’ve stayed away from their foundations since then. I do LOVE their Fresh and Flawless Pressed Powder though!! I remember when Youtubers used to rave about the colour inject mineral lipsticks but now they seem to have gone off the radar. I’m glad I stayed away from the velourlips, it would’ve been too much for my dry lips I think.

    • hahah ah good times! I have the Fresh and Flawless Pressed Powder sitting there but I haven’t started using it yet! Yep, the Velourlips have since been thrown out, they’re not worth the effort for me!
