We’re all well aware by now that I’m a huge fan of drugstore beauty launches but lately, lip products have been having a moment in the spotlight. So many awesome releases have made their way to Australian shores and it’s well worth rounding them all up in one little post to let you know which ones are worth your time. Grab a cup of tea, this one’s a long read!
It’s worth mentioning that I did a whole post on the Maybelline Colour Drama Lipsticks a week ago and they are WELL worth the price tag, too.
Let’s start off with the Rimmel Oh My Gloss lip gloss range – I have the shades Love Bug*, Snog, Pin Up* and Rebel Red*. A light pink with silver glitter, mauve-y nude, fuchsia pink and sheeny red, respectively. These boast 6-hour wear and Rimmel’s ‘Gloss Lock’ technology, so they sound pretty promising and I’ve got to say, I’m impressed. This is the kind of lip gloss where you don’t need to apply colour underneath it (with the exception of Love Bug) because they’re so pigmented. They wear really well but aren’t too glossy after a full meal, I find. The colour does stay on the deeper shades, though! The applicator is tapered to a point which makes application quick and precise, definitely a plus!
Next up are the Covergirl Colourlicious Lip Glosses, which have already had a bit of coverage here on TBC. I have the shades Melted Toffee, Whipped Berry* and Berrylicious. Melted Toffee is a light nude shade, Whipped Berry is a bright, almost neon pink and Berrylicious is a little bit berry and a little bit pink. My favourite shade of the three is definitely Berrylicious but that doesn’t mean the other shades aren’t getting a fair workout too. These are not quite as opaque as the Rimmel ones but serve their function of giving a bit of barely there colour really well. They’re non-sticky, apply easily and wear comfortably until you eat.
A few more lip glosses… Essence just updated their range, bringing in some new XXXL Nude Lip Glosses, I have the shades Shy Beauty*, a really light, pinky nude (think Creme D’Nude in lip gloss form) and Taste The Sweets*, a peachy, warm nude. Both of these are really lovely, although Shy Beauty is perhaps a little too light for my personal tastes. They’re not sticky at all and feel really comfortable on the lips. They have really great doe-foot applicator too, which I find makes so much of a difference.
Innoxa recently brought out their Full Colour Lip Creams and I was SO keen to try them out. I picked up the shade Simply Stunning, the nude in the range, as I knew I’d get the most wear out of it. Unfortunately, these didn’t live up to my expectation – they have a cooling effect on the lips but they wear really strangely on my lips – drying them out and noticeably settling into lip lines. Maybe it’s just this nude shade, maybe the formulation works out better with the bolder colours in the range but this one was a bit of a miss for me.
L to R: Essence Shy Beauty, Essence Taste The Sweets, Innoxa Simply Stunning.Onto some lipsticks that have hit the drugstore recently. To accompany the XXXL Nude Lipglosses, Essence released some new lipsticks. I have the shades Wearing Only A Smile* and Come Naturally* here. These apply smoothly but can be a little slippy, meaning they don’t last a super long time on the lips. Neither of the colours suit me very well, with Wearing Only A Smile looking a little bit foundation-lips on me and Come Naturally turning quite brown but I’d definitely pick up other shades in the range because the formula is great.
I was very excited for the release of the Revlon Ultra HD Lipsticks and I picked up the shades HD Petunia and HD Rose and have been testing them out quite a bit. The formula is like nothing I’ve tried before – so, so slippy yet still strongly pigmented. They glide onto the lips with ease. The slippiness means that they don’t last very well but they feel really comfortable. The packaging of these, however is terrible. After all of the complaints about the Lip Butters, with this same packaging, you’d think Revlon would change it up but these are just straight up messy.
I’ve been waiting for the release of the L’Oreal Reds Collection here for SO long and jumped on Blake’s Red as soon as I saw it in store. This one is everything I wanted and more – a beautiful, easy to wear red that actually makes it almost unscathed through a meal and isn’t drying on the lips. It’s quickly risen up the ranks to be one of my favourite red lipsticks. Anything good enough for Blake Lively is good enough for me…
Overall, I’m continuously impressed with the quality products keep popping up in Priceline – this definitely isn’t all of the lip releases that have been dropping over recent months. My picks of the bunch? For glosses it’s a tie between the Rimmel Oh My Gloss and Covergirl Colourlicious Lip Glosses – if you want the punch of pigment go for Rimmel, if you want a subtle gloss, Covergirl is your best bet. For lipsticks, the L’Oreal formula wins by a landslide – I’m head over heels with Blake’s Red but the Revlon Ultra HD range has some seriously gorgeous shades in there, too.
What are you eyeing in the drugstore lately? Do any of these lip launches appeal to you?
