I have been receiving a lot of questions about the Smashbox Photo Finish Primer Water recently over on Instagram. Each time I post a pic of it I have one or two comments at least asking me how it is so I thought I’d quickly get around to writing a proper review here with my thoughts. When I first heard about this product I knew I definitely wanted to give it a go, being a big fan of setting sprays, having a rather large collection of primers and we all know that Smashbox’s primer game is on point. Let’s just say this does not disappoint…
The Mecca website refers to this as ‘like a super-charged energy drink for your skin’ and says it aims to refresh, hydrate, prime and prep your skin (aren’t the last two basically the same thing anyway?). The idea is to spray this on your face before make-up application as a primer. The actual spray is really fine and covers the whole face, which I’m glad about as that could’ve definitely ruined the idea behind the product. I normally do two sprays over my whole face and give it a bit of time to settle in before getting down to business with my foundation. I then do one spray, sometimes, after finishing off my make-up to set everything in place.
It feels like there’s nothing on the skin, which I love, as I’ve never been too into silicone filled primers, yet it seems to work SO well. I’ve been using it almost every day and have been amazed at how well my base has been lasting – I come home from a long day at uni and everything is still looking great, I even had my boyfriend ask if I’d reapplied my make-up in the afternoon. I can’t say much for it’s hydration claims, even though it is said to have electrolytes in it to ‘awaken tired skin’, but I haven’t been concerned about it – the main thing that matters to me is that it keeps my make-up on all day. My skin hasn’t been too oily recently but this has been keeping my t-zone in check as well which is always good.
Overall, this product is great because it is so lightweight and is one less heavy thing on my skin all day. It is a pricy one, coming in at $44, but as long as you’re not needing for something to keep too much excess oil at bay or need something really hydrating I can totally recommend trying this one out!
